Chief Peter J. Zabita joined the Byram Township Police Department as a Police Officer in February 1996 after serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1987 to 1993. Chief Zabita continued his military career in the New Jersey National Guard retiring from the military as a Captain in 2011 with 22 years of service.  Chief Zabita served two combat tours overseas and several other deployments within the United States and New Jersey in support of homeland security and overseas combat operations. Upon appointment as a Police Officer in 1996 he was assigned to the Patrol Division where he served for many years as the Department's D.A.R.E. instructor. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2001 where he served as night shift supervisor. Chief Zabita was promoted to Lieutenant in 2006 where he served as the patrol and detective division's commander. He began serving as the Department's Acting Chief of Police on January 1, 2016. On February 5, 2016 he was promoted to his current position as Chief of Police. Chief Zabita has an Associates Degree in criminal Justice from Sussex County Community College, a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Roger Williams University and a Master's Degree in Human Resources and Personnel Management from Seton Hall University. Chief Zabita is a graduate of the 244th Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Class and is a member of the Sussex County Association of Chiefs of Police, the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
