How do I apply for a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FID) and/or a Handgun Purchase Permit?

Step 1: Go to the Forms and Reports tab and locate Firearms Application under Forms.

Step 2: Enter Byram Township’s ORI # NJ0190400.

Step 3: Complete the online application.

Step 4: At the end of your online application you will be notified that you must remit payment to the Byram Township Police Department. You must pay $50.00 for a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FID) and $25.00 for each Handgun Purchase Permit in the form of check or exact cash. A non-refundable payment is required to be made prior to the completion of the background as per N.J.A.C.13:54-1.4.

  • FID Cards – You will be receiving automated email updates from the New Jersey State Police portal throughout this new process. The physical identification card must be obtained at your issuing police department. Keep in mind that if you are applying for the initial FID Card, you must print out the fingerprint form and make an appointment with IdentoGo to have your fingerprints taken. Once your application has been processed and approved, you will receive a phone call from this department. You must bring a picture ID with name and date of birth when picking up your FID Card.
  • Handgun Purchase Permit – Paper permits will no longer be available as they are being replaced by electronic permits. An e-Permit becomes active from the date of approval of S.T.S.033 application. An e-Permit is initially active for a 90-day period and will automatically be renewed once for another 90-day period if required. For an application with e-Permit, applicants can go directly to a licensed firearms dealership with the information in the approval email to purchase a handgun.
  • Please advise your references that the FARS system will email them the reference questions to be answered. Please advise them to complete the questions immediately to progress your background investigation.
  • The online application is applicant driven. Please ensure that you have entered the correct information prior to submitting your application. Failure to do so may delay the process and/or require you to resubmit the application which may cause you to pay twice.
